Two Pennsylvania Teens Lose Their Lives in a Tragic Drunk Driving Accident

Around the middle of February, a tragic drunk driving accident occurred in Exton, Pennsylvania, and claimed the lives of two teenagers, one a junior in high school and the other a university student. The two teenagers were travelling in a minivan with their parents and two other adults, when their automobile was struck by a drunk driver, who was behind the wheel of a pickup truck. According to a report by Ginger Dunbar of Daily Local News, the force of the accident was enormous.

Both of the teens had been wearing their seatbelts at the time of the accident, but the force of it caused them both to be ejected from the car. Both of them died at the scene as a result of their injuries. In addition, their two parents were seriously injured in the accident, and were immediately taken to the hospital in critical condition. There was no word on the condition of the other two adults who were also passengers in the minivan. According to the police, per the report from Daily Local News, the minivan was literally torn apart by the force of the collision.

The driver of the pick up truck was judged to be drunk by police at the scene when he failed a field sobriety test. His drunkenness was later confirmed by a blood test administered at a local hospital. According to the Daily Local News report, the driver, Thomas Miur, had been observed by others driving erratically in the area. In addition to this, there is some speculation that he may have been texting while driving at the time of the accident, further compounding the tragic mistake that he made to get behind the wheel while intoxicated.

The criminal courts are taking Miur’s case quite seriously. In addition to other charges, he has been arraigned on two counts of vehicular homicide while driving under the influence, and bail in his case was set at $75,000. The other charges that Miur faces include aggravated assault and reckless endangerment. Depending upon the evolving condition of the teens’ two parents, there could be additional charges forthcoming.

Drunk Driving Accidents Are Always Senseless

Our hearts go out to the families that were affected by this senseless and avoidable tragedy. Those who make the choice to drink to the point of intoxication should always make the choice to not get behind the wheel. When they do get behind the wheel, they take not only their own lives in their hands, but also the lives of every other person on the roadways. It is reckless behavior, pure and simple, and it’s something that cannot be tolerated in the society that we live in today.

At Heavens Law, we’ve seen first hand the tragic toll that drunk driving accidents can take on Pennsylvania residents, as many of our clients have been so affected. It’s important for all Pennsylvania residents to know that they have the right to pursue damages in the event that their lives are turned upside down by the recklessness of a drunken driver.

Naturally, the criminal courts will deal with those who injure or even kill others while driving under the influence. But justice cannot pay for medical bills, and nor can it even begin to recoup the cost of losing a loved one. For this reason, anyone who has been affected by a drunk driving accident should get in touch with a qualified personal injury lawyer. Such a lawyer can help hold the drunk driver to financial task, and can assist with recovering all of the compensation necessary to deal with the aftermath of such a tragic, and ultimately avoidable, accident.
