Tragic I-78 Crash Highlights Dangers of Roadside Breakdowns — What You Need to Know

On the night of June 16, 2025, a routine drive turned tragic on Interstate 78 in Williams Township, Northampton County. A man lost his life while trying to push his companion’s disabled vehicle off the busy highway—an incident that underscores how dangerous breakdowns can be on high-speed roadways.

What Happened

According to authorities, a woman’s 2010 Chevrolet Equinox ran out of fuel in the right travel lane near the Route 33 exit. As she and a man from New Jersey attempted to push the stalled SUV to safety, an eastbound tractor-trailer collided with the vehicle, then sideswiped a disabled semi-truck parked on the shoulder. Tragically, the man pushing the vehicle was killed at the scene. The woman was transported to Saint Luke’s Anderson Hospital with undisclosed injuries.

The crash left debris scattered across both directions of I-78, leading to an overnight highway closure that lasted until early morning.

A Disturbing Pattern on Pennsylvania Highways

Sadly, this crash follows a troubling pattern of similar fatal incidents along I-78 and other major Pennsylvania roadways. In recent months, multiple crashes involving stranded vehicles and tractor-trailers have claimed lives, exposing critical safety risks for both motorists and first responders.
