Tragic Construction Site Accident in North Huntingdon Raises Safety Concerns

A tragic construction accident on July 8 has left the Western Pennsylvania construction community reeling, as 53-year-old Brian Keefer of Indian Head, Fayette County, was fatally injured while working on a bridge rehabilitation project in North Huntingdon. The incident occurred around 11 a.m. at the Water Street bridge, which carries Route 993 over Brush Creek.

According to police reports, Keefer was struck and run over by a piece of machinery involved in the bridge cleaning process. Police Chief Robert Rizzo noted that the equipment moved forward and then reversed, tragically striking the worker. A second construction worker was also injured in the incident and was transported to AHN Forbes Hospital in Monroeville, where he was treated and released.

The bridge work was part of a larger $3.13 million PennDOT rehabilitation project covering six bridges across Westmoreland and Washington counties. The work had just begun the day prior. Gulisek Construction, a contractor based in East Huntingdon, had been awarded the project and employed both Keefer and the injured worker.

Authorities and investigators remained on the scene for hours following the incident, and initial reports suggest this was a construction-related accident. Chief Rizzo stated that the companies involved have been cooperative with the ongoing investigation.

The Broader Issue: Construction Site Safety

This tragic event highlights the ever-present risks faced by construction workers, especially those involved in heavy equipment operations. Despite safety protocols, construction sites remain among the most dangerous workplaces in the United States.

Under Pennsylvania law, employees injured on the job—or families of those killed—may be entitled to workers’ compensation benefits. However, in cases where third-party negligence or faulty equipment may have played a role, additional legal options could be pursued. Thorough investigations are crucial in determining whether all safety procedures were properly followed and whether any outside party may bear liability.
