Heartbreak and Hope: Aftermath of the Tragic Scooter Collision in Aston

On Saturday, June 14, 2025, around 2:18 p.m., tragedy struck near the intersection of Lehr Boulevard and Concord Road in Aston Township, Delaware County, when two young girls were struck by a vehicle while riding on an electric scooter. The collision left both juveniles with life-threatening injuries. One of the girls, 12‑year‑old Abigail Gillon, tragically died two days later, on June 16, at Conemaugh Memorial Hospital, while her close friend, 11‑year‑old Isabella “Bella” Jones, remains hospitalized in critical condition.

A Community Shattered

Eyewitnesses and local media report that Abigail and Bella were riding together on a single electric scooter when they were thrown off after hitting a curb—right into the path of an oncoming vehicle. The driver stayed on scene and is cooperating fully with Aston Township Police and the Delaware County Accident Reconstruction Team. Authorities have not filed any charges, and the incident is still under investigation.

That evening and the following days, the Aston community came together in mourning. At a vigil held at Ridley Middle School, neighbors, classmates, coaches, and family released balloons in memory of Abigail. Thousands gathered to honor her impact as a swimmer and cheerleader, fondly remembering her “passion” and “joy”.

Safety Concerns Around E‑Scooters

This heartbreaking incident raises broader concerns surrounding the operation of electric scooters. In Pennsylvania, these devices can reach speeds of 15–20 mph—fast enough to overlap sidewalk and street traffic, yet with none of the protective safety measures of bicycles or cars.

Despite growing popularity, regulatory oversight has not kept pace. Key risk factors include:

  • Speed mismatch – Scooters travel much faster than pedestrians but lack protection in collisions, increasing head and spinal injury risk.
  • Infrastructure gaps – Many suburban roads, like Lehr Boulevard, lack sidewalks or bike lanes, forcing riders into vehicle lanes.
  • Limited visibility – Smaller scooters and younger riders are often overlooked by drivers, especially at intersections.

Legal and Community Response

From a legal perspective, drivers involved in such collisions may be subject to investigation for negligence—especially if distracted driving or failure to yield are factors. Families of injured riders should consider:

  1. Preserving evidence – Photos, scene details, and eyewitness contacts are critical.
  2. Seeking prompt legal guidance – Experienced legal help can ensure insurance claims are handled correctly.
  3. Understanding broader liability – Municipalities may share fault if the intersection lacked signage, sidewalks, or visibility enhancements.
