Tragic Train-SUV Collision Claims Two Lives in Rockwood, PA

A quiet morning in Rockwood Borough turned into a devastating tragedy on Thursday, June 20, 2025, when a collision between a CSX freight train and an SUV claimed the lives of two Somerset women. The fatal accident occurred around 10:28 a.m. at a railroad crossing on Bridge Street, just south of Main Street, shaking the tight-knit Somerset County community.

What Happened

According to reports from Somerset State Police Corporal Nicholas Gray, an SUV occupied by Susan Spangler, 67, and Deloris Latshaw, 85, was struck by a CSX freight train at the Bridge Street crossing. Emergency responders rushed to the scene, but sadly, both women lost their lives as a result of the crash.

Coroner Jeff Lees confirmed that Ms. Latshaw passed away at the scene, while Ms. Spangler was airlifted to Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center, where she later succumbed to her injuries.

An eyewitness told WTAJ News that one of the women was transported by medical helicopter in critical condition, but efforts to save her were unsuccessful. The train involved was a CSX freight locomotive, and no injuries were reported among the train crew.
