One Fatality in Pittsylvania Tractor-Trailer Collision
A recent collision between a car and a tractor-trailer in Pittsylvania County left one dead. The name of the victim has not yet been released, nor has the driver of the tractor-trailer been identified, but the truck is owned by R+L Carriers. Authorities have also not said whether or not there were passengers in either vehicle or if anyone else was injured in the crash.
The incident took place around 1 pm on Cane Creek Parkway at Morgan Olson Way, which is located near the intersection of Tom Fork Road. Northbound and Southbound traffic is not required to stop, but those entering from Tom Fork Road do have a stop sign.
The incident left the intersection of the three roads filled with debris and glass hours after it occurred.
Though the initial impact occurred at the intersection, the sedan involved came to a stop several hundred feet away. It is presumed that the tractor-trailer, which was found facing southward toward US 58, had initially been headed in that direction. However, it was in the northbound lane following the crash. The sedan was severely damaged and lodged under the tractor-trailer. Both vehicles caught fire.
People nearby stated they heard the initial crash. There were also what they described as loud popping noises, which was thought to be the sedan’s tires bursting from the drag.
Few other details have been released concerning the crash, but are expected in the future.
Tractor-Trailer Accidents Deadliest on Nation’s Roadways
Though there is always a risk every time you get behind the wheel of a vehicle, that risk is greater when you are involved in a collision with a tractor-trailer or semi-truck. These vehicles are heavy and travel at speeds on the highway ranging from 55 to 75 mph. It takes them a great deal longer than regular-sized vehicles to stop and they have more visibility issues than other vehicles on the road.
Due to these factors, involvement in a crash with a tractor-trailer is especially deadly. Those lucky enough to survive are often left with severe injuries. Traumatic brain injuries, lost limbs, and permanent scarring are common outcomes for victims of tractor-trailer crashes.
In many of these cases, victims are left with a lifetime of medical bills and necessary medical care. These are life-changing events and not to be taken lightly.
