Uniontown Crash Leaves One Person Injured and Another Person Deceased
A recent collision involving two motorcycles and a van on Route 40 resulted in one man’s death. Another was seriously injured.
The crash occurred at the intersection of National Pike and Fayette Street.
The deceased man, identified as 26-year old Tyler Swenglish of Smithfield, was pronounced dead at the scene after his bike collided with the van. A few moments later the rider of the second bike, Skyler Shaffer, a 27-year old man from Masontown, hit the fan. Shaffer was flown to a Morgantown, West Virginia hospital with a leg injury.
The driver of the van did not suffer any significant injuries.
Motorcycle Accidents Linked to Serious Injuries
It’s common for those involved in motorcycle accidents to suffer serious injuries. Sadly, many of these occurrences result in death.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, motorcycle fatalities account for about 14 percent of all traffic-related deaths. In 2018, that was just under 5000 riders. More than 80 percent of accidents that involve a motorcycle result in death or injury of the rider.
Why Are There So Many Fatal Motorcycle Accidents?
One of the reasons why motorcycles are so dangerous is because riders have little to no protection from injuries when a crash occurs. Bikes lack the safety features of other vehicles, such as seat belts and airbags and the frame of the car or truck. It’s also common for riders to be thrown from their bike when they crash.
What Should You Do If You Were Involved in a Motorcycle Accident?
If possible, contact 911 after every accident, even if you believe there were no serious injuries.
If your injuries are minor or non-existent, take photographs of the scene, talk to witnesses, and document the accident scene in writing as carefully as possible
Even if you receive immediate medical attention in the emergency room and you’re released, it’s a good idea to schedule a visit with your doctor. He or she will help you assess any long-term issues that might arise after the accident.
