No Criminal Charges in Fatal Dump Truck Crash, According to Law Enforcement

No criminal charges are expected to be filed concerning the collision between a dump truck and a Chevy Cruze sedan on West Virginia 51/Middleway Pike west of Shirley Road that killed the driver of the sedan.

The female driver of the sedan was one of two people in the vehicle. A female passenger was also severely injured in the crash and flown to Winchester Medical Center in Virginia. The driver of the truck suffered minor injuries and was treated at a nearby hospital. A dog in the sedan also suffered serious injuries and is being treated at The Blue Ridge Veterinary facility.

The crash occurred when the front left tire of the dump truck exploded while the truck was in motion and caused the truck to swerve over the center line and collide with the oncoming sedan. Both vehicles came to a stop in a nearby soybean field. While stopped, the load of gravel carried by the truck shifted, causing the truck to topple over and crush the sedan.

It took rescue responders about 40 minutes to free the injured passenger from the sedan. The driver was discovered about 15 minutes later and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The accident caused West Virginia 51 near the site to be shut down for several hours until the scene was cleared and the gravel was cleaned up.
