Smith Quantum Ski and Snowboard Helmet Recall

Smith Optics has issued a voluntary recall for several of its ski and snowboard helmets. The recall was issued because the buckle on the helmet is at risk for disengaging, which would leave wearers at risk for head injury. The company is offering to repair the malfunctioning buckles.

The recall involves all ski and snowboard helmets sold by the company throughout 2016 and 2017. The company estimates that 7000 helmets are affected by the recall in the United States and Canada, as well as another 1000 helmets sold in China.

Helmets were available in sizes small, medium, large, and extra-large, and came in a variety of colors including matte black/charcoal, matte white/charcoal, matte red/charcoal, matte green/black, matte olive green, and matte gray. Each helmet features “Smith Quantum” printed on the inside along with the manufacture date.

Helmets were sold at specialty ski and snowboard shops and by major retailers, as well as online at Backcountry.com, Smithoptics.com, and other online retailers, from October 2016 through July 2017. The helmets retailed for about $300.

Owners of the helmets are encouraged to stop using their helmets immediately and contact the company for instructions on how to return the helmet for a repair. The process is free of charge.

Luckily, there have been no reported injuries caused by the defect.

Voluntary Recall Issued by Smith Quantum

Smith Optic’s recall was issued September 7th under the US Consumer Product Safety Commission’s Fast Track Recall process. Recalls in the program are initiated by firms who commit to work with CPSC to quickly announce their recall and remedy to protect consumers.

According to the CPSC, its work has helped to reduce to a decline in the rate of deaths and injuries caused by consumer products throughout the last four decades. Federal law prohibits the sale of products that are part of a publicly-announced voluntary recall by a manufacturer or a mandatory recall ordered by the Commission.

Our firm has worked with individuals injured by consumer products. We’ve helped them get compensation to help pay for medical care and other costs associated with their injuries. We believe anyone injured by a product approved for sale deserves to receive compensation for their pain and suffering.
