Commentary on Tractor-Trailer Accident
When folks see a rear-end collision, they tend to automatically assume that the rear driver did something wrong. Perhaps that’s true here, as well. It’s certainly concerning that someone would hit the back of a large truck during daylight hours. However, it’s also important to consider the specific context of the rear-end collision.
Here, authorities said a semi-truck was waiting to turn into a nearby Tums facility. Was the truck doing so in as safe a manner as possible? Was the obstruction in the road unreasonable or even legally acceptable? Were there other factors that made it unreasonable difficult to avoid the truck? Is there anything about the facility or the road itself that contributed to this deadly accident?
The most likely explanation is obviously that the victim made a mistake, but that doesn’t mean we just accept that explanation and move on without actually digging into the details. There’s a family out there that deserves to know they’re getting the full story. Maybe authorities are working to get them the facts they need, but many similar accidents I’ve come across over the years required more thorough independent investigations.
