3 Dead, Over a Dozen Injured in Tour Bus Collision
Three people are dead and over a dozen are injured after an Italian tour bus and a tractor-trailer collide.
Last Wednesday, Authorities in eastern Pennsylvania reported to the scene of a head- on collision between a tour bus carrying Italian tourists and a tractor-trailer, that left three people dead and sent to over a dozen to the hospital. Monroe County Emergency officials reported that the deadly collision happened shortly after 10 a.m. on Interstate 380 in the Pocono Mountain region, about 75 miles northwest of New York City. Authorities say that the mangled front end of the bus was wedged into the tractor-trailer, which was sheared in half. The cab came to rest on its side in the woods. Monroe County Coroner Robert Allen reported at the scene that the death toll had climbed from two to three. Matt Kislak of the county 911 center says four of the thirteen victims had to be flown to hospitals and remain in critical condition. The owners of the tour bus company have reported that the driver of the bus was among the three victims killed in the collision.
The owners of the tour bus, Academy Bus operates tours that head from New York to Niagara Falls and Canada. Academy Bus said that the driver had over a decade of experience with the company, and the bus was en route from New York to Niagara Falls when the accident occurred. Authorities report that the bus was carrying Italian tourists that appeared to have been chartered by Viaggidea, an Italian tour operator. A woman who answered the phone at the Viaggidea offices in Milan, Italy, told reporters she knew nothing about the accident.
With three people dead and over a dozen injured in this case there are sure to be lawsuits filed against the tour bus company and the tractor-trailer, depending on who’s at fault. The cause of the crash will be under investigation and there is technology attached to the tractor-trailer that recorded the actions of the tractor-trailer during the crash.
