No Charges Filed against Driver in Delaware 1 Crash

No charges have been filed against Alvin Hubbard III, the driver of a pickup truck that crossed the median into oncoming traffic on Delaware 1, causing a multi-car crash that killed five people.

Hubbard, 44 years old and from East New Market, Maryland, was driving a Ford F-350 truck.

In addition to the fatalities, which included Audie Trinidad and his four daughters, the girls’ mother was injured in the crash and remains in the hospital fair condition.

Hubbard Lost Control of His Vehicle after Crossing the Median

Hubbard’s truck hit another oncoming vehicle before making contact with Trinidad. The driver of that vehicle was treated and released from the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. A passenger in Hubbard’s vehicle was also treated for injuries and released from the hospital.

Hubbard was traveling south on Delaware 1 around 3:45 pm near Noxontown Road. He left the southbound lanes, crossed the median into northbound traffic, and collided with Kern’s vehicle which spun into an embankment. Trinidad’s vehicle slammed into Hubbard’s out of control truck and both vehicles end up in a ditch.

According to Trinidad’s brother Daniel, the family members were so badly injured in the accident their bodies were not recognizable. Despite no charges being filed yet, the surviving Trinidad brother wants Hubbard charged. He spoke of his nieces to the New York Daily News, saying “They didn’t get to grow up and experience life as an adult. This guy took it all away. This is multiple manslaughter.”

Trinidad, 61, grew up in the Philippines. He arrived in the United States in 1987 and enlisted in the Navy, serving for seven years. He worked at the USPS and lived in his home in Teaneck, with his four daughters and wife, Mary Rose Ballocanag.

A GoFundMe page has been established for the victims’ family and has raised more than $200,000. A significant portion of the funds raised will go toward the medical care needed by Ballocanag, mother of the four girls killed in the crash.
